The Sony SAL-70200G Review   by Andrew Suryono

The SAL-70200G lens is one of Sony’s original lens in the G-series group of lenses. Having originally been designed for the Minolta AF 70-200mm F2.8 APO G D SSM, the SAL-70200G was retooled and redesigned for Sony’s use. Typical of all G-series lenses, the SAL-70200G is not one to be modest about its price. At almost two grand, $1999.99 to be exact, it’s almost screaming for you to take your money to the bank. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, shall we? Let’s see what makes this lens so special and oh, so expensive!

Product Details

The SAL-70200G has a minimum to maximum focal length of 105 to 300 millimeters with a minimum aperture of f32 and a maximum aperture range of f2.8. It has 2 Direct Manual Focus (DMF) modes; 3 focus stop buttons and a focus limiter. It has a .21x magnifying power with a minimum focus distance of 1.2m and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5. It has a 77mm non-rotating filter size and an angle of view of about 23 to 8 degrees.
The lens contains four extra low dispersion glass elements giving greater visual acuity and lesser chromatic aberration. It has 9 rounded aperture blades and 19 elements in 16 groups inc. 4x ED elements. It weighs 1340g and measures 87×197mm in dimension.

Performance

Performance-wise, the SAL-70200G really lives up to its price. It has a nice bokeh, a very sharp wide open, and fast and silent focusing motor with the SSM. The image quality of the SAL-70200G is astounding. Even at low light shooting without a flash, this lens produces fantastic results. Picture quality is simply amazing and the colors turn out really well. For its performance versus its price, everyone agrees that it more than pays for its expense. Years from now, you’ll laugh at yourself at why you balk so hard at getting this expensive lens when you could have saved yourself from the agony of ruined photos.

Conclusion

Its build quality is fantastic. The lens body is made of metal. Internal focusing is of great advantage, allowing for the lens’ length to remain static. While weight is an issue, this can easily be solved by a monopod or a tripod. You can really make use of its SSM features while shooting wildlife, while its fast focusing action allows you to capture the best sporting moments you are shooting. This makes the SAL-70200G the best multi-purpose lens to use in long-distance sports and wildlife photography.
