I just bought the DSLR Sony Alpha A290, I am a beginner! What lens should I get for it?
I am a beginner in photography, I just bought the Sony Alpha A290 DSLR, what lens should i get for it?
I have the standard 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM, but whould like to get another telephoto zoom lens but not too expensive. Like the cheapest or something?
If you want cheap then consider these. You can get the Sony/Tamron/Sigma new and all of them used on eBay.
Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 – The Tamron is a good starter lens, it is cheap, but gets a bit soft after 220mm.
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 – This is the non-APO version, don’t bother, the Tamron above is around the same price and a bit better.
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO – The APO is very good for the price, a fair bit more expensive than the Tamron and only starts to get soft after 250mm.
Sony 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 & Minolta 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 – Basically the same lens, Sony changed the way it looks and put their badge on it. Both the Tamron and Sigma APO are better.
These should also be considered:
Minolta 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 – Fairly sharp, probably as good as any of the non-APO lenses above. Don’t get this one though, try to find the APO below.
Minolta 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 APO – Very good, better than any of the lenses above but not as wide a focal range.
Minolta 70-210mm f4.5-5.6 – As good as the Tamron, but not as much range. Best avoided.
Minolta 70-210mm f4 – This is called the “beer can” because of it’s shape. It is long and heavy. However it has a constant f4 aperture throughout its focal range and is as sharp as the Minolta 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 APO, maybe sharper!
Either buy a new Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 or if you can put up with a 100-300mm buy a used Minolta 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 APO for around the same price.
